Holi, the rainbow festival that is a part of the Indian scene, is not just about the joyful color splashes but a celebration that is also interwoven with the numerous tales that illustrate the cultural and spiritual fabric of the nation. At this time of the year when the festival nears, it is high time to explore the famous stories that have contributed a lot to the valence of Holi.
Prahlad’s tale and Hiranyakashipu
In the very core of Holi’s story is the ancestral myth of Hiranyakashipu, the mighty demon king, and Prahlad his religious son. The boon of being invincible made Hiranyakashipu arrogant and he now claimed himself as a god. Yet, Prahlad continued his unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu and thereby infuriating his father much more. In spite of Prahlada’s father trying to get rid of him by throwing him into a pit of snakes and poisoning him, Prahlad survived since he had absolute trust in Lord Vishnu. Ultimately, Hiranyakashipu asked his sister Holika, who had the boon of not to be burned in fire to finally get rid of his son. They made an attempt to burn down Prahlad by placing him in a bonfire with Holika but divine powers intervened and it was the malevolent Holika who turned into ashes and Prahlad remained safe, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
The Legends of Lord Krishna
One of the myths which is greatly liked is of Shri Krishna during the Holi festival. Those who lived in Braj were familiar with so many mischievous actions Krishna loved particularly; the favorite one was when he was painting Shri Radha ji’s face. According to the fable, Krishna, who was obliquely dark-skinned, became sensitive about Radha’s fair complexion. Finally, in a moment of fun, Krishna’s mother, Yashoda, asked him to put some colors on Radha’s face, and then the tradition of color playing during Holi was born. The playful gesture of love and brotherhood became the most valued part of the festival and is still carried on.
